REFILING

REFILING

Refilling is an essential aspect of fire extinguisher service and maintenance and cannot be ignored. So, business owners need to understand the importance of fire extinguisher recharging.

Many people get confused about the refilling & recharging process.

Refilling is the process of adding an agent to an existing container for maintaining or increasing its fire performance rating and extending the equipment’s life.

Whereas Recharging is referred to as adding pressure to an extinguisher.

If you want detailed information about the Refilling process, then you have landed at the right place.

Should Fire Extinguishers be Refilled or Replaced?

It is important to know that not all fire equipment can be refilled except extinguishers. If your fire extinguisher is damaged or disposable, it has to be replaced.

If your fire extinguisher has been used even partially and in good working condition, it must be refilled.

Cosmos has been considered as the chief provider for refilling as the best possible service to our customers. Moreover, our fire and safety organization refills all varieties of Fire Extinguishers, Fire Suppression, Fire Sprinklers, and Fire Hydrants.

Experts at Cosmos use only the highest quality materials which are based on the latest ISO standards, and our technicians are highly trained and certified to refill any type of fire extinguisher quickly and efficiently.

When & why is the Refilling of Fire extinguishers required?

The need for a fire extinguisher refill is not always obvious. Fire extinguishers must be refilled when they are fully used. Yet they have to be completely replaced when they are damaged, have had their seals broken, or have been exposed to high temperatures.

Adding to this, it is always suggested to have your fire extinguishers inspected by a certified professional at least once a year. This will help ensure that your fire extinguishers are in good working order and that they will be ready to use in the event of a fire.

How often do you have to refill fire extinguishers?

Fire extinguishers need to be reloaded after every use even if they are not empty. This refreshing ensures that there will be enough pressure and suppressant liquid to extinguish another outburst of fire.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, rechargeable fire extinguishers must be refilled after every 6 years. For the most commonly used dry chemical fire extinguishers, recharging is required at six and twelve years from the date of manufacturing.

Which fire extinguishers can be refilled?

All fire extinguishers can be refilled, but some may need replacement. For example, carbon dioxide (CO2) fire extinguishers can only be refilled a limited number of times before the cylinder needs to be replaced. This is because the CO2 expands as it discharges, and this causes the cylinder to become weaker over time.

Process of Refilling

Refilling a fire extinguisher is not as complicated as people normally think. In most cases, it can be done in a few simple steps:

  • The first step is to remove the extinguisher from its location. This can be done by unscrewing the bracket and holding it in place.
  • Once the extinguisher is removed, take it to a location where it can be easily refilled. A sink or a bathtub is usually a good place to do so.
  • The next step is to remove the cap from the top of the extinguisher. This will allow you to access the fill valve.
  • Once the cap is removed, use a funnel to fill the extinguisher with the proper type of fire extinguishing agent.
  • After the extinguisher is filled, replace the cap and screw it back into place.
  • At last, attach the extinguisher back to its bracket.

What are its benefits?

There are many advantages to refilling a fire extinguisher rather than simply buying a new one.

  • First and foremost, it is significantly cheaper to refill an extinguisher than to purchase a new one.
  • Refilling an extinguisher extends its life and avoids replacing it as often.
  • Finally, and most importantly, refilling a fire extinguisher ensures that it will work properly when the fire outbreaks.
